Discipline and Physical Domain Extension

Siemens is making significant investments to expand NX Nastran’s solution capabilities, so analysts can use a common solver to address a broader range of problems. Highlights of discipline and physical domain extensions in NX Nastran 8 include:

Multiphysics thermo-mechanical analysis allows you to analyze thermal contact problems that will also have impact on structural performance. The thermo-mechanical analysis is done by coupling an NX Thermal solution with an NX Nastran solution (SOL 101) for linear statics analysis. Coupling is made easy within the integrated environment, and eliminates data transfer errors.
Non-linear analysis material and loading extensions lets you simulate more material types for non-linear analysis. Examples include visco-elastic properties for both hyperelastic and non-hyperelastic materials, Mullins effect with hyperelastic material, and combined creep with elastic/plastic strain.
Rotor Dynamics, used for analysis of rotating machinery, enables analysis of generic, symmetric and asymmetric rotating structures in both fixed and rotating reference systems. It provides critical speed and stability analyses, frequency and transient response computations, both in direct and modal approaches.

Computational Performance and Numerical Accuracy

Analysis models today can routinely be on the order of 10 to 20 million DOFs in size. As computer hardware continues to improve, analysis model sizes also continue to grow. Siemens makes sure NX Nastran’s solver performance keeps ahead of the pace so that you can efficiently solve ever-larger analysis problems. Computational performance and numerical accuracy improvement highlights available in NX Nastran 8 include:

Parallel computing scalability improvements increase SMP (shared memory parallel) processing performance and address frequency response optimization for DMP (distributed memory parallel) processing
RDModes has been extended to include the modal transient response (SOL 112) and modal analysis with optimization (SOL 200) solutions. This allows more solutions to receive SMP and DMP performance benefits.

Ease of Modeling and Engineering Workflow

NX Nastran 8 simplifies modeling, solution set-up and results postprocessing. Highlights of these improvements in NX Nastran 8 include:

Connection improvements greatly simplify the finite element modeling process. NX Nastran’s contact mechanisms have been extended to include special cases such as edge-to-surface contacts. Loads carried by glue connections can also be viewed in a postprocessor.

In 2007, Helena switched from an aging 3D wireframe design tool to SolidWorks software, a computer-aided design (CAD) system from Dassault Systèmes Solidworks Corporation. Recently, Helena decided to redesign one of its most popular electrophoresis sample handlers. Handlers are used in applications such as forensics, molecular biology, genetics, microbiology and biochemistry. The issue was that replacement parts for the unit were becoming scarce and Helena needed to redesign it with new components.

Undertaking this and other major design work using SolidWorks seemed logical. But recent press and blog posts from SolidWorks users that Dassault planned to remove the Parasolid® software modeling kernel from its SolidWorks product worried Helena.

Billy Oliver, a longtime SolidWorks user and design engineer at Helena, started reading in 2010 about SolidWorks moving to another modeling kernel. The veteran designer says Helena didn't want to redesign its products in SolidWorks if the modeling kernel was changing. To understand the impact, he cites one of the products needing redesign contains about 2,000 unique parts at 12,000 pieces per unit.

Once the kernel change was confirmed, Helena switched to Solid Edge® software. Helena now achieves 100 percent conversion of its SolidWorks and CADKEY® software wireframe designs into Solid Edge and preserves its valuable data.

3D Systems Completes The Acquisition Of Z Corp and Vidar

ROCK HILL, South Carolina, January 3, 2012 – 3D Systems Corporation (NYSE: DDD) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of Z Corporation (“Z Corp”) and Vidar Systems (“Vidar”) for $135.5 million in cash, net of cash received and subject to final closing adjustments, from Contex Group, a subsidiary of Ratos AB, a listed private equity company located in Stockholm, Sweden.

The company also announced that earlier today it consolidated its entire personal and professional 3D printer businesses into a single unit under the leadership of John Kawola, former Z Corp CEO who was named 3D Systems Vice-President and General-Manager, Personal and Professional 3D Printers business unit. The company affirmed its plans and expectations to deliver combined revenue and cost synergies in the range of $5-10 million dollars in 2012 and reiterated its expectation to incur incremental fourth quarter 2011 acquisition costs in the range of $2.7 to $3.2 million.

Reporting of cable and wire cut length and attributes (allowing for a slack percentage and wire stripping) are captured during the harness design process. The export of ready-to-use ‘net list’ files adds these mechanical attributes to generate harness designs that are ready for manufacturing.

Automatic wire harness design- Once electrical engineers have developed and proven their designs using electrical prototypes (a task becoming increasingly important as the size and complexity of electrical systems increase), the harness wizard allows mechanical engineers to automatically generate and route physical wires and cables. The harness wizard uses input from dedicated electrical schematics applications such as Mentor Graphics, Cimteam and Vesys to automatically transfer any net-list components and connections to Solid Edge.

Oakland University Receives $34 Million Software Grant From Siemens PLM Software

Oakland University industrial and systems engineering students will benefit significantly from a nearly $34 million in-kind software grant from Siemens PLM Software made to the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

The in-kind software grant, made through Siemens PLM Software’s GO PLM initiative, will provide the college with Tecnomatix software, a best-in-class digital manufacturing solution that is used globally by manufacturers in various industries. Siemens PLM Software, a business unit of the Siemens Industry Automation Division and a leading global provider of product lifecycle management software and services, is a leading PLM software provider for U.S. automakers and their suppliers.

“This grant from Siemens PLM Software is absolutely critical to us, because this is where advanced manufacturing is going,” said Robert Van Til, professor of industrial and systems engineering at OU. “Without the grant, we simply would not have had access to market-leading PLM technology like Tecnomatix. Solid Edge was a hidden nugget when Siemens acquired the former UGS; under Newbury’s leadership the nugget is getting polished.

Later this week Siemens PLM Software introduces the latest version of Solid Edge, ST4, to its users at a special launch event in Huntsville, Alabama. Among the Siemens team attending will be Karsten Newbury, senior vice president and general manager for Siemens PLM Software’s Velocity Series, their suite of mainstream PL products.
Velocity Series is a comprehensive family of modular, yet integrated solutions addressing PLM in what Siemens PLM calls the Mainstream market. For years, users of Solid Edge and other Velocity Series product have criticized Siemens PLM (and UGS before the acquisition) of not devoting enough attention or resources to the Mainstream products.
In the interview that follows, Newbury explains what happened, and going forward how Siemens PLM will promote Solid Edge and the other Velocity Series products (Femap for analysis; Teamcenter Express for data management; CAM Express for automated milling). Newbury’s biography on the Siemens PLM Software website describes him as having “a strong history of successful organizational management with a demonstrated ability to build winning teams and improve business performance.”
GraphicSpeak (GfxS): For years Solid Edge users have criticized Siemens PLM Software and UGS before it for how little attention the company paid to the Velocity Series. How have things changed?
Karsten Newbury (KN): We are focusing more on individual product brands more now. For example, the event and launch in mid-June is specifically for Solid Edge ST4, not for our entire Velocity portfolio.
As a division we have changed quite a bit in the last six to 12 months; fundamental changes, some are visible, some less so. I was on the acquisition team when Siemens acquired UGS, and we looked for nuggets. In 2009 we formed a separate, dedicated Velocity segment inside Siemens PLM Software. We saw the Mainstream segment was not visible enough. UGS had previously launched the Velocity portfolio but somehow it got stuck. So we formed the separate unit with the company. The Velocity group includes all the development, technology, marketing, and sales. We work closely with various country groups, field marketing people, and the go-to market people throughout Siemens PLM. We have streamlined resources in the field and created dedicated Velocity teams. There’s been a lot of work going on to create focus and accountability, to treat this unit like a separate business.

We have new marketing leadership in place and we are working more closely with channel partners. In particular we are pushing for a real identity in the marketplace for Solid Edge. We are putting the product brands up top now. The Velocity Series portfolio is a great story, but many customers need a single tool, and prefer to identify with single brands. We want each product to have a clear identity. Solid Edge, for example is all about “Design Better,” our new slogan. Not just “Lets Go Design” [A SolidWorks slogan] but specifically “Design Better.” Synchronous Technology in Solid Edge is a great tool. Users say ST gives Solid Edge great usability and great workflow. We want to drive these ideas into the marketplace.
GfxS: Siemens PLM has products for the largest, enterprise-class manufacturers, and for the SMB and mid-market manufacturers. How do you distinguish between the various market segments?
KN: We look at it as two market segments, Enterprise and Mainstream. Enterprise has more complex, integrated process problem sets which require a holistic viewpoint and the involvement of the entire company. Mostly we are talking about the largest manufacturing firms when we say Enterprise. Mainstream is a huge market. Mainstream customers just want an out-of-the box tool. We have to use different approaches to address the needs of each group. We have two separate segments, two separate teams, in Siemens PLM. Each group approaches the market differently.
Our Enterprise team approaches a client like Canon or Daimler by looking at broad requirements first. But, we sometimes find Enterprise customers who use Solid Edge day-to-day and NX for mechatronics and other high end needs.

Although the spotlight is on Solid Edge this week, the Velocity Series group also supports other products for the Mainstream market. The core profile of Solid Edge customers is that they want an out-of-the-box solution. This is a major difference between Enterprise and Mainstream accounts. PLM is a bad word in mainstream. CAD blogger Matt Lombard says “what a different world PLM is,” but now he gets it for the right market. The core characteristic of our Solid Edge customers have not changed. We are focusing on growth segments. We are getting into the BRICs market, Brazil, Russia, India, China. We are expanding our presence. We are learning about regional market requirements, which find their way into our products and our go-to-market strategy. With the release of Solid Edge ST4 we have a ton of new drafting features, which is high on the list of feature requests in China and Russia. Drafting is not that high on US users’ lists of new features. By expanding our footprint we are getting into more functionality and usability.

GfxS: Did anything take you by surprise when you took over the Velocity Series?
KN: The thing that most surprised me about this business is the passion of the users. There are existing users who have strong opinions about our marketing. Some of the criticism is right; we haven’t given our teams the resources to drive more marketing activities. So we have increased budgets. Getting results will take longer than I would like it to. We don’t want to do gimmicky marketing. We want to position our marketing to match who we are. What is our identity? What are we about? This is how we want to drive our message to the marketplace, not simply conduct a nice little campaign. Some of these things take longer than we would like.
One thing about being part of Siemens, when we put our mind to something we have plenty of resources to incrementally build out, to deliver on a plan.
GfxS: Many believe CAD is a mature market, and that future sales cannot compare to the first years of the industry. How do you continue to grow in a mature market?
KN: We believe a market is only saturated if you have no additional value to offer. Our Synchronous Technology in Solid Edge and NX is only scratching the surface. We have incredible potential to continue to make design more intuitive. When people can focus on design more, and think less about the mechanics of constructing the design, it frees up incredible potential and opens up new markets with industrial designers, for example. Synchronous Technology is a new paradigm. We are convinced we offer new value, and intend to lead the market with it.
Beyond that, it still surprises me how many people still use 2D. There is still tremendous opportunity in 3D CAD. There will also be some displacement activities, as customers switch vendors. But without those, we still see big market potential.
It has been said Solid Edge is the best-kept secret in the industry; in mind share we are at a disadvantage. But this is also a big opportunity, because we are not at a technical disadvantage. SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor have more seats, but every seat of SolidWorks includes Parasolid [3D design kernel sold by Siemens PLM]. So the core Siemens technology is really out there, more than 3 million copies. Solid Edge has hundreds of thousands of seats. We are clearly number three in the market. But have a strong presence, with more users than most people realize. From 2009 to 2010 the number of Solid Edge licenses grew by 50%. That same growth trajectory is continuing in 2011.

NX Automotive Stamping Die Design is designed to assist product designers and manufacturing engineers with a toolkit specifically focused on die process specification, die layout and die analysis. The package automates the more costly and time-consuming processes associated with the production of stamped sheet metal parts, significantly reducing their typical lead times.

NX Automotive Stamping Die Design focuses on the initial stage of die face design, automating processes that are typically performed concurrently with product design but before die structure design and NC machining tasks begin. It models the shape transformation of the sheet metal as it moves through the die press line, providing a suite of tools for die face design that is customized for product designers and manufacturing engineers. With the ingenious new 3DxWare 10 driver platform, it’s now possible to use a 3D mouse in any application. From Microsoft Office to internet browsers and from media players to games with 3DxWare 10, a 3D mouse can complement, or provide a compelling alternative to, most input devices including keyboard, traditional mouse, joystick and gamepads.

IMPORTANT: 3DxWare 10 is currently available in beta version only. Beta software is not officially supported, however you can visit our forum to give feedback, share your experiences and get advice.

Much More Than a Mouse

The simple 3DxWare 10 interface allows you to assign keyboard strokes and traditional mouse or joystick movements in any combination to the 3D mouse. For example, tilt the controller cap to scroll a Web page, twist the cap to adjust the volume in iTunes, or use all six axes to pilot a helicopter in Battlefield Bad Company 2. The choice of application and assignment of the six axes and up to 31 function keys (depending on the 3D mouse model) is entirely up to you.

3DxWare 10 offers limitless possibilities for incorporating 3D mice into everyday use, including:

Documents and Browsers3D mice now offer a compelling alternative to traditional mouse wheel navigation in documents, spreadsheets and Web pages. Gently tilt the 3D mouse cap to scroll the view up or down or twist the cap to zoom in and out.
GamesMost PC gamers rely on a combination of traditional mouse and keyboard to control their character or camera view, but with 3DxWare 10 a 3D mouse can be used to deliver intuitive and comfortable control in games like The Sims 3. With a 3D mouse, you can twist the cap to adjust the volume, tilt the cap sideways to fast forward and rewind, and tilt the cap forward or backward to move between tracks in your playlist. If you want to handle it a different way, it’s easy to customize the 3D mouse to your needs.
3D Collaboration3DxWare 10 also provides a new feature for professional users by allowing multiple 3D mice to be used on one workstation. This innovative development enables easier viewing of 3D models in group design reviews or client presentations.

First World War Soldier Identified With Help from Z Corporation 3D Printing Technology

Private Thomas Lawless Laid to Rest Last Week in France

BURLINGTON, Mass. – A First World War soldier killed in action nearly a century ago can finally rest in peace following the identification of his remains and his burial last week in France. This resolution was possible due to a novel combination of identification disciplines, including Z Corporation 3D printing technology.

The remains of the solider, now identified as Private Thomas Lawless of Calgary, Alberta, were discovered in 2003 at a construction site near Avion, France. He was killed in action on June 8, 1917, a few months after the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He was 28.

Two sets of remains were found at the site. The first soldier was identified using DNA analysis in 2007. A combination of historical research, forensic anthropology (the study of the human skeleton), facial reconstruction and isotopic analysis yielded Lawless’ identification, as announced on February 24, 2011.
“Although it’s sad to contemplate the loss of young lives in war, it’s rewarding to account for the missing, both for the sake of the deceased and for long-grieving family members,” said Andrew J. Nelson, a key researcher on the project and Associate Dean of Research for the Faculty of Social Science at the University of Western Ontario.

How they did itThe identification team created 3D computer models of Lawless’s skull, derived from CT scan data of several large skull fragments, in order to narrow the list of possible matches for the remains. Physical models of the skull were produced using a Z Corporation 3D printer, which creates physical composite models from scan data much as a document printer produces a business letter from a word-processing file.

Using muscle markings on the skull model, scientific tissue-depth tables and plastilina modeling clay, the team worked with noted artist Christian Corbet to construct a face on the model. They then photographed that face, and superimposed images of it on photographs of soldiers who were potential matches. By seeing how the images lined up – by face height, width and features such as jaw shape – the team was able to narrow the list of potential matches to two. An isotopic analysis of teeth and the jaw bone indicated that the recovered soldier grew up in Dublin – a direct biographical match with Lawless.

“Anthropological analysis and mitochondrial DNA testing are standard approaches for identification,” Nelson explained. “However, mtDNA requires material from living family members on the maternal side to make a connection. In this case, we had none of that at our disposal. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first instance in which facial reconstruction and isotopic analysis were added to the mix. It may result in a new protocol, or certainly new tools, for the identification of the missing.”

Private Thomas Lawless, born April 11, 1889, was a member of the 49th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force and was buried March 15, 2011, at La Chaudière Military Cemetery in Vimy, France, with his family in attendance. La Chaudière, a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery, currently has 907 servicemen from the First World War buried or commemorated there, including Private Herbert Peterson, the soldier found in 2003 with Private Lawless.

More applications for 3D printingNelson sees a variety of applications for 3D printing in anthropology beyond the identification of soldiers’ remains. For example, his team used Z Corporation 3D printing in the 2003 facial reconstruction of an Egyptian mummy housed at the Chatham-Kent Museum in Chatham, Ontario. But that’s just scratching the surface, he says.

“Societies who wish to move forward must know their past to better understand who they are now and where they might be going,” he said. “The high variability of cultures of the past – before the internetworking of the world – tells us a lot about the interplay of traits like gender, status, health and wealth in different settings. It’s the bones that help us associate those cultural traits with a particular set of human remains. And though CT scans enable us to a look inside a mummy, for example, without disturbing the bones, wrappings and so on, 3D printing lets us extract these pieces, figuratively speaking, by creating a physical model from CT scan data. We can thus examine the bones more closely and learn more from them.”
